You may now be able to use Gemini Live without a paid subscription
Gemini Live, Google’s two-way artificial intelligence (AI) conversation feature, is reportedly rolling out to free Gemini users on Android. The voice mode was first revealed during Google I/O in May and was rolled out to Gemini Advanced users last week. However, a new report claims that the feature is now being expanded to all Gemini users on Android. There’s no word, however, on whether iOS users will also get the feature in the coming days.
Gemini Live is reportedly rolling out to Android users
9to5Google reports that the Gemini Live feature has been spotted on Android devices with the free Gemini subscription. If true, this is an interesting move by the Mountain View-based tech giant, as it only rolled out the feature to Gemini Advanced users last week. Interestingly, Gadgets 360 staff was unable to spot the feature.
According to the report, users with Android devices will have the option to switch the voice assistant to Gemini, with the Gemini app showing a new icon in the shape of a “circular waveform with a sparkle” at the bottom-right side of the Gemini assistant interface and the app.
Tapping the icon will open a full-screen Gemini Live interface with “End” and “Hold” buttons at the bottom and a large blue waveform animation in the middle, similar to what we’ve seen with Gemini Advanced. While the feature is active, a notification will also appear indicating its status. Users can also end the call from the notification.
Additionally, once the call ends, users will be presented with a text prompt containing the entire conversation between the user and Gemini. This is similar to the user experience in Voice Mode in ChatGPT.
While an obvious advantage of the feature is the ability to use the AI chatbot hands-free, this is possible even with the Gemini AI assistant interface. The distinguishing feature here is the conversational and human-like voice, which can change pitch, tonality and even emotions. Notably, the feature does not support extensions for other apps like Gmail, Maps and more.
Furthermore, users can also choose from 10 different voices to chat with Gemini. These voices all differ in pitch, regional accent and energy levels.
