You’ll soon be able to create AI-generated YouTube Shorts
YouTube is rolling out several new features to its video streaming platform, and several of them are powered by artificial intelligence (AI). On Wednesday, the platform held its Made on YouTube event, and the biggest announcement was the integration of a new AI video model that will allow creators to generate backgrounds and six-second videos for Shorts. The AI model used for this is Veo, which was previously unveiled by Google DeepMind. Additionally, YouTube is also rolling out new ways for creators to use AI to generate video ideas and titles.
YouTube’s New AI Features
In a blog postthe company highlighted that it will integrate its AI video generation model Veo into YouTube Shorts later this year. The tool builds on Dream Screens, the experimental feature it launched in June, which the video streaming giant claims will allow users to create live video backgrounds.
YouTube gave an example of what the tool can do, saying, “Imagine a BookTuber stepping into the pages of the classic novel The Secret Garden, or a fashion designer instantly visualizing fun and imaginative design concepts to share with their audience.” But generating backgrounds is only part of what Veo will do for Shorts creators.
The tool also enables creators to generate six-second vertical videos for Shorts. The company views the use case as follows: If a creator is missing some footage to make the perfect short video, they can use AI to generate it and add it to the Shorts video. Notably, videos generated with the tool will be watermarked by Google’s internal AI labeling tool SynthID.
YouTube is also introducing auto-dubbing, a feature that automatically dubs the voices in videos into different languages. It’s meant to promote localized creators to a global audience by breaking the language barrier. It’s currently being tested with a small group of creators, but will be expanded to a larger user base in the coming months. While the company mentioned languages like Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian, the full list of supported languages isn’t known.
Additionally, creators are getting another AI tool that makes it easier for them to respond to the high volume of comments. In the Comments tab in the YouTube Studio app, creators will see AI-enhanced reply suggestions that make it easy to respond to their audience. These comments will be tailored to the creator’s style and can be customized.
Creators can also use AI to brainstorm video ideas, titles, and thumbnails for videos. The Inspiration tab in YouTube Studio is now getting AI capabilities to suggest video ideas as bulleted outlines. This feature was first announced in August and was available in beta. It’s now rolling out to a wider user base. Notably, the feature is powered by Gemini.
