Your Meta Quest 3 now lets you measure real-world objects with a new layout app

Meta Quest 3 is getting a new app that lets users measure objects in the real world. The utility app, called Layout, was released by the company on Monday as part of the Meta Quest v68 update for the mixed-reality headset. The new app will let users measure real-world objects and place virtual objects to a specific size specification. It’s intended to help people visualize the right size furniture and other objects for their homes before making a purchase.

The utility app was announced in a blog after by Meta on Monday. The company said: “We’re introducing a new Layout Utility app for redesigning your real-world spaces, making it easier to manage your in-progress downloads, and more.” Once the update is installed, the app will be available in the Meta Quest App Library.

Users need 139.28 MB of free storage space to download the layout application. The app currently supports English (UK and US) and Spanish. It supports touch controls and can function offline, the company said.

Layout is essentially a measurement and visualization tool that can help users confirm the size of furniture or appliances before making a purchase. Users can measure existing furniture before going to the store or when shopping online. They can also place virtual furniture in a real environment and then measure the dimensions of the object to determine the correct size.

In addition, it also has a leveling tool that can help users confirm whether a photo frame or a smart TV mounted on a wall is horizontally parallel or tilted. The app can measure objects along their length, width and height, giving users a three-dimensional reference point.

In addition to the Layout app, the Meta Quest v68 update also added the Meta AI Vision and chatbot capabilities that were announced last week. Meta Quest 3 users can use it as the official assistant for the device. Meta AI can answer general questions and observe the real-world environment using the passthrough function of the mixed reality headset and answer questions around it.
