Ms Mhey’s distraught mother, who has been keeping a vigil across the street and closely monitoring the search, told neighbors she had reported the smell of gas in the building and on the street in recent months.

Neighbors described the moment she returned to the house.

“She (the mother) was on her hands and knees screaming for her daughter,” a neighbor said.

“She didn’t want to leave, she sat here all night in the rain and the cold and said she wouldn’t leave until her daughter was gone.”

Fire and Rescue Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said heavy machinery and a large crane were used to remove the debris and locate Ms Mhey.

“It was because we were able to lift those large portions of the floor and gain greater access to the previously restricted rooms in the apartment that we were finally able to locate the missing person,” Commissioner Fewtrell said.

Chief Inspector Darren Newman of the Blacktown Police Area told the media on Monday that the tragic news devastated Ms Mhey’s mother.

“As you can imagine, mum is devastated,” Supt Newman said.

“We will continue to support the family through our family network and just make sure she is looked after as best we can.”
