Jail officials claimed the dissident, 47, collapsed brutal Polar Wolf prison and could not be resuscitated.

Navalnyare known for campaigns against official corruption and for leading large protests against the Kremlin, was perhaps Putin's greatest enemy.

He made his last declaration of love to his wife Julia Navalnaya47, op Valentine's Day.

The charismatic politician said: “Darling, with you everything is like a song: between us there are cities, the starting lights of airports, blue snowstorms and thousands of kilometers.

“But I feel you close every second, and I love you more and more.”

Yulia has been described as the “First Lady” of the Russian opposition.

She met Navalny, a lawyer from Moscow, in the summer from 1998 during a holiday in Turkey.

The couple married two years later and had two children: a daughter Daria, 23, and a son Zakhar, 15.

Before Yulia became her husband's personal assistant and housewife for their family, she was an economist and worked for numerous Russian banks.

She remained a loyal and constant supporter of her husband through his many bouts of illness healthuntil his “death”.

In 2020, while her husband fought for his life in a Berlin hospitalshe regularly informed journalists about his condition.

Some of the first words he spoke when he woke up from his coma after being poisoned with Novichok were: “Yulia, you saved me.”

Navalny had been jailed for 19 years to avoid becoming president and was walking on prison grounds when he mysteriously collapsed, prison officials said.

A statement read: “On February 16, 2024, in Penal Colony No. 3, convict Navalny AA felt unwell after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness.”

The officials further claimed that medics were sent to Navalny's aid but were unable to revive him.

Conflicting reports claim he was being held in solitary confinement when he died, the newspaper said Human rights Foundation.

His reported death comes after him suffered a serious health incident in Decemberat which point his supporters expressed fear for his life.

A spokesman for the Kremlin critic said at the time that he had not been fed for days and had a “feeling of hunger” in his cell.

Putin's best-known opponent Alexei Navalny, 47, has died in prison.

Here's a timeline that took the leader of the opposition from the face of freedom in Russia and the Kremlin's greatest enemy to a hellish Siberian prison and to an early grave.

June 4, 1976 — Navalny was born in a western part of the Moscow region.

1997 — Graduated from Russia's RUDN University, where he studied law.

2004 – Forms a movement against rampant overdevelopment in Moscow.

2008 — Gains fame for exposing corruption in state-owned enterprises

December 2011 – Participates in mass protests sparked by reports of widespread manipulation of Russia's elections, and is arrested and jailed for 15 days for “challenging a government official.”

March 2012 – More mass protests break out and Navalny accuses key Kremlin henchmen of corruption

July 2012 — Russia's Investigative Committee accuses Navalny of embezzlement. He rejects the claims, saying they are politically motivated

2013 — Navalny wants to become mayor of Moscow

July 2013 – A court in Kirov convicts Navalny of embezzlement in the Kirovles case and sentences him to five years in prison. He appeals and is allowed to continue his campaign
