Amazon Prime Video subscribers discover a hidden package that will save them money

AMAZON Prime Video subscribers can save up to £36/$96 per year by opting for a 'hidden' package – but there's a catch.

As ads are added to Amazon's Prime Video streaming service and the ad-free offering becomes increasingly expensive, many subscribers are looking for ways to save.

Cordbusters found that many subscribers pay for the full Amazon Prime service, which offers free shipping and a limited music subscription in addition to Prime Video.

The full tier costs around £8.99/$14.99 per month, or £95/$139 for a year.

But Prime Video actually has a standalone subscription option, for those who rarely need free shipping and don't use Amazon Music.

This Prime Video package costs just £5.99/$6.99 per month.

The catch? Ads will be added to the £5.99/$6.99 subscription.

But viewers can make it ad-free for an extra £2.99/$3 per month, which still makes it cheaper than the full month.

According to Cordbusters, this subscription is not easy to find.

For example, when viewers sign up for Prime Video's 30-day free trial, their subscription will automatically renew afterwards for £8.99/$14.99 per month.

“It appears that Amazon would much rather sign you up for the full Prime subscription, which is why the standalone Prime Video subscription is difficult to find – and nearly impossible to sign up for on mobile devices,” the report said.

“While we have been assured in the past by Amazon's PR that the standalone Prime Video tier is not being phased out, it certainly seems like Amazon really wants you to sign up for the full Prime membership, not the standalone video membership .”

At £5.99/46.99 per month, you'll save up to £36/$96 over monthly Amazon Prime membership if users stay subscribed for a year.

While American viewers can save a lot more, every little bit helps these days.

How to find the cheaper Prime Video tier

In a desktop computer browser, go to the Amazon Prime login page.

On that page, assuming you're not already a Prime member, you'll see a little link that says “View more plans.”

Once you click 'View more plans' you'll see the three available Prime subscription levels – each priced at £5.99, £8.99 and £95 respectively.
