US equities are delighted and in awe of simple British usage that we all take for granted

An American man living in the UK has shared his surprise and joy when he discovered a British custom that many of us take for granted.

David Escobedo, originally from Los Angeles but living in Chester while studying for a PHD, regularly uses social media to share his thoughts on life in England.

During a video on TikTok, he talked about something he’s seen bar patrons do while drinking.

He said, ‘I’ve got another one, here we go. When I’ve been to pubs it’s pretty normal for everyone to grab a drink and sit around a table.

“And if they nibble a little bit they get a bag of chips and they rip the chips open like a plate and everybody, and invite everybody to eat chips.”

David went on to explain why he found the practice so fascinating.

He added, “Now in the United States, at least in Los Angeles, it’s pretty uncommon to eat in bars in general unless it’s a bar and a restaurant.

“But something I find interesting is kind of like the community action of tearing open the bag of chips, there usually aren’t many chips, and sharing those with everyone.

“So to me it’s a really nice gesture because it’s like ‘I don’t have much, I’m munchy, but I’m going to share what I have with everyone here.’

So this gesture of sharing a torn open bag of chips, which we would call chips in the United States, is really interesting to me and very communal.

“It’s very – what I have is yours, what I really like, it’s just very different.”

The heartwarming video has since gone viral, drawing thousands of comments below it.

A person replied to David, ‘It is the law, you must tear open the sack and put it in the middle of the table. Also with dry roasted peanuts.’

“Thank you for reminding British people that they do really sweet things and don’t even notice,” another social media user added.

Someone else gushed: ‘As a Brit it’s these little things we do but don’t notice I love!!’

Another person replied, ‘chips – pub salad.’

‘It would be a bit rude not to share your chips and we usually get a selection for the plate. Then fold the paper into a triangle,’ someone else added.

It’s not the first time Americans have taken a liking to our quirky customs and delights, with an American citizen even saying they “identify” as a Brit.

A man originally from Chicago loves British culture and weather so much that he now “identifies” as a British man.

The social media star, who goes by the name of Tlo, now lives in Florida but is obsessed with British food, TV shows and even the weather.

To show his devotion, Tlo, who will not reveal his name, starts his days off with a “perfectly brewed cuppa” and a “homemade chip butty” while watching British teen sitcom The Inbetweeners.

And his online UK followers are now even sending him suggestions for British snacks to try.

Tlo’s first taste of British cuisine began when he ate beans and cheese on toast a few years ago.
