Anya Taylor Joy‘s outfit from the Dune: part two premiere in New York City has fans talking.
The 27-year-old actress appeared on the red carpet on Sunday, February 25, in a halter dress by Maison Margiela from the fashion house’s spring/summer 2024 couture collection. The floor-length number featured a fitted metallic dress beneath a black sheer overlay that fell into a flowing skirt.
After the screening, Taylor-Joy took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes footage of her preparation process, which involved squeezing into an extremely restrictive corset. In the black and white photo, Taylor-Joy posed topless and showed off her barely visible waist and hips.
Taylor-Joy’s followers were quick to mention the look in the comments section. “Can’t we normalize famine?” one fan wrote, while a second commented: “Rough. Expected better from you tbh. Thinness is not chic.”
A third social media responded with: “Do you realize how harmful corsets are to women’s health and should not be promoted?”
However, others came to Taylor-Joy’s defense. “What’s going on with you guys in the comments? Go touch some grass. Her body is fine, she has always been on the slim side and in the first photo it is just a corset she wore to an event,” said one comment.
Taylor-Joy isn’t the only celebrity to be criticized for wearing a corset.
Back in 2019, Kim Kardashian found herself in hot water after wearing a custom Mister Pearl corset under her ‘dripping’ Thierry Mugler dress to the Met Gala. At the time, she revealed via Instagram that she had to take “breathing classes” but said the experience was “worth it.”
Kardashian later admitted in July 2019 WJ. Magazine digital cover story: “I have never felt such pain in my life.” She added: “I’ll have to show you pictures of the aftermath when I took it off – the cuts on my back and stomach.”
Fans shared their reactions on social media, condemning Kardashian for promoting unrealistic body standards.
“Not a healthy image to promote,” claimed one disappointed fan, while a second wrote: “Stop it Kimmy! You are beautiful enough. Stop killing your organs.”
