Golden Globes host Jo Koy was grilled by many in and out of Hollywood after his monologue failed.

The targets of his jokes included Taylor Swift, Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner and the biggest movie of 2023: Barbie.

The comedian – who was dubbed ‘the worst presenter ever’ by many on social media – said: ‘Barbie is [about] a plastic doll with big breasts. I saw Barbie, I loved it. I really loved it. I don’t want you to think I’m a creep, but it was pretty weird being attracted to a plastic doll. Just something about your eyes, Ryan [Gosling].’

He added: ‘The key moment for Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet. Ah, or what casting directors call character actor.”

The jokes fell rather flat in front of the large audience at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, but Barbie director Greta Gerwig called it quits BBC4 Radio the joke was: ‘not bad.’

The jokes fell quite flat in front of the large audience at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, but Barbie director Greta Gerwig said on BBC 4 Radio that the joke was ‘not bad’.

“She’s the first mass-produced doll with breasts, so he was right,” Greta said in the interview.

‘I think a lot of the project of the film was implausible because it’s about a plastic doll. Barbie, by its construction, has no character, no story, she is there to be projected onto,” she said.

“But the insight that (Barbie toymaker) Ruth Handler had when she saw her daughter playing with baby dolls was that she realized that my daughter doesn’t want to pretend to be a mother, she wants pretend you’re a grown woman,” Gerwig added.

Barbie won the first Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award at the Golden Globes, which wasn’t a surprise considering Barbie was the biggest movie of 2023 ($636.2 million domestic, $1.145 billion worldwide), which Gerwig also considered.

‘It was really amazing and emotional to be able to take the stage with the group that made it, and it felt very fitting because, I think, what we all wanted most importantly was to connect with people and to let people have a sharing experience in the cinemas,” Gerwig said.

“It felt like even though this was a brand new award, this was the award to honor that, and that’s what we wanted to do,” she added.

‘The circle was very complete. It was nice to hear (star/producer) Margot (Robbie) say, ‘This is for everyone who came,'” Gerwig said.

The director added that Barbie has been around since 1959 and that she “has been a villain and a hero, but in a way, even though it seems so superficial, it felt like such a rich place to start.”

Barbie has sparked a lot of controversy over feminism and misandry, which Gerwig found “great.”

‘It’s evoked so many different reactions, but those are always my favorite things. Okay, let’s talk about it. Let’s discuss it. What was the feeling about that?’ Gerwig said.

Gerwig added, “In some ways it’s not surprising, because Barbie is sometimes ahead of the culture, sometimes behind the culture, and she has always been a focal point of discussion.”

The director added that she was born in 1983 and her own mother wasn’t sure if Barbie was the right toy for her. “And that’s why I love Barbie.”
