It followed reports one XL bully “had gotten dangerously out of control and was attacking people” in Battersea.

Four men were rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before police shot the animal dead.

A Met spokesperson said: “Police were called to reports of a dog – described as an XL Bully – dangerously out of control and attacking people near Home Road, SW11.

“Due to the threat the dog posed to the public, armed officers attended.

“After assessing the situation, officers made the difficult decision to destroy the dog and he was shot.

“Four men – all members of the public – were taken to hospital for treatment for injuries sustained during the dog attack.

“None of their injuries are life-threatening.”

XL bullies have been banned in England and Wales since February 1.

It came after they were believed to be responsible for 20 percent of dog attacks by 2023.

Owning an XL Bully dog ​​without an exemption certificate is now a criminal offence.

It is illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, donate, rehome, abandon or allow XL Bully type dogs to roam in England and Wales.
