Fraser Olender‘s on-screen relationship with Captain Sandy Yawn on Below deck was pretty rocky, but they’ve since ended up in a better place.
“I saw Captain Sandy in London about three weeks ago. Of course we get along great,” Fraser, 30, said exclusively We weekly at BravoCon on Friday, November 3, before waving goodbye to their past drama. “This happened so long ago. People think it’s all current. It happened two years ago.”
He added: “We are friends [and] we are friends. She taught me a lot. I am very grateful to her.”
Sandy, 59, temporarily joined season 10 of Below deck to light up Captain Lee Rosbach while dealing with health issues. Viewers saw Fraser and Sandy clash after she fired casseroles Camille Lamb And Alissa Humber. Sandy then claimed Fraser was responsible for the domestic department’s problems, before calling him a “cancer” affecting St David.
“The fish stinks at the head and right now that head is you. What you did created the worst experience I have ever had on a boat with a head stew,” she said in a February episode. ‘If there is insubordination and blatant disrespect, I have no room for that. It started with Fraser and it must end with Fraser. He has no respect for authority and he needs to earn my respect back.”
Fraser began to cry as he remembered the conversation with his mother.
“I was very angry about the way Captain Sandy spoke to me, and I expressed my opinion to the rest of the crew. And the captain somehow got wind of it – and called me the cancer of the crew,” he said before bursting into tears. “If anyone ever talks about cancer again – about what I went through with my father – it disgusts me. The fact that she thinks so negatively about me makes me feel terrible.”
After the episode aired, Sandy walked back her comments following backlash from viewers.
“I had cancer and I will say this – I should have chosen different words,” she admitted Us in February. “I have been captain for years [and] those were the terms we used. So, [in terms of] evolve, I would definitely change my terminology. [It was a] poor choice of words.”
However, Sandy continued to express her frustration with Fraser’s performance as a leader. “There was a moment [where I considered firing him]. Absolute. Because listen, the walls are thin, and [it is important to not] jump on their bandwagon. Change that story. That is your role as a leader here,” she added. “You are absolutely responsible for your team. So I didn’t go to the [interior] team members [with my issues]. I went to the main dish and said, ‘This isn’t happening. You hired them. Fix it.'”
Lee, 73, eventually came back on board to finish the season. The Below Deck OG won’t be back for season 11 though – Below deck adventure‘S Captain Kerry Titheradge will step into the role instead.
Fraser, for his part, had nothing but praise for his new captain.
“They are all brilliant in their own right,” Fraser said of working with Kerry, Sandy and Lee. He then teased the challenges of season 11, adding, “I feel like I’ve grown a lot this season. But obviously I didn’t get the perfect crew, so that was a struggle. But you will see that it is a disaster.”
Kerry has also participated in participating in a new series in the Below deck franchise. He said Lee gave him some advice about the takeover, noting, “He said I had a good crew. He told me I had a great main stew and he was right.
