Patna: Wedding celebrations are supposed to be happy events, but celebratory firings during such occasions turn into mourning for many families. Hence, the Bihar police has come up with a new idea to stop celebratory wedding shootings in the state by asking people to inform their local police stations about every marriage that takes place in the family.

“A number of deaths and injuries have been observed as a result of celebratory shelling in the state. Therefore, we have asked the people of the state, wedding courts, banquet halls, dharmshalas owners to inform the local police about any marriage,” said ADGP Law and Order, Sanjay Singh.

Under the new guidelines, owners of wedding lawns, banquet halls and dharamshalas must maintain security protocols, including CCTV cameras in all corners.

People organizing a wedding at their home must also notify the police and provide the list of gun licenses they have, as well as the list of guests to the local police station.

People have been observed firing into the air in enthusiasm during wedding parties, birthday parties, wedding anniversary celebrations etc. “Unnecessary firing is a criminal offense and the offenders face the risk of action and prison terms,” the ADGP said.

“We have recorded 99 cases of festive discharge in 2022, with 8 people killed and 36 injured. We seized 18 guns and also revoked 8 gun permits. In 2023 through May 31, 9 people were killed in such shelling while 13 people were injured. We have arrested 72 persons and seized 3 weapons in this regard,” he added.
