This contest marked the first clash between the NDA and the INDIA bloc ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, after Nitish Kumar's unexpected switch.

Soon after the results, AAP National Congress member and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “The kind of foul play committed in broad daylight in the Chandigarh mayoral elections is a matter of concern. If they stoop to this level in the mayoral election, they can go to any level in the general election. This is very worrying.”

Originally scheduled for January 18, the elections were previously postponed just before councilors were about to cast their votes due to the ill health of Speaker Anil Masih. This sparked a protest from the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress members who accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating the turn of events.
