Boy, 17, dies in 'work accident' on Bury industrial estate as two men, 36 and 41, are arrested

A 17-year-old boy has died after a 'work accident' on an industrial estate, during which two men were arrested.

Taller Manchester Police rushed to the scene of the accident on Tile Street in Bury shortly after 10am today.

Firefighters and paramedics were also called to attend the incident.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of… the driving crimes and manslaughter by gross negligence, while a 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.

Crime Scene investigators were seen taking photo evidence in the area during lunch.

A number of people were seen coming and going from the scene throughout the afternoon, while the wider industrial estate was busy with open businesses.

Eyewitnesses reported a heavy police presence and paramedics following the tragedy.

One worker said the incident had been described to them as an “accident,” but other workers in the area said they had been notified that someone had been “hit in the head.”

A worker on a scrap heap next one at the scene said: “An ambulance tried to enter the garden.

'They said apparently someone had been injured. A lot of police officers came and we took them there.”

Officers remained at the scene throughout Thursday, with both the police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigating.

A number of police cars were seen parked on private property at the end of Tile Street, outside a gated area.

A joint investigation is now underway between GMP and the HSE to establish the full circumstances surrounding the teenager's death.

A spokesperson for GMP said: “At around 10.10am today (Thursday 8 February 2024), officers were called to reports of welfare concerns at a business premises on Tile Street, Bury.

“A 17-year-old boy was identified as having been involved in a workplace accident and despite the best efforts of emergency services he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offenses and manslaughter by gross negligence and a 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.

“A joint investigation has been launched between GMP Bury CID and the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the circumstances leading to the boy's death. The investigation is ongoing at this stage.”
