The Met Office has warned that freezing fog, heavy rain and strong winds are on the way after the mercury fell to -4C.

Snow covered Cumbria and Wiltshire over the weekend – with Brits waking up to a frigid -3C in parts of the US Scotland and southern Wales this morning.

Forecasters say there will be a ‘cold start’ for many

The Met Office warned of the cold after the mercury fell to a frigid -4.6 in Benson, Oxfordshire yesterday.

The rain forecast comes as 40 flood warnings remain in force from the Environment Agency, while there are 132 flood warnings.

The With office said: “A cold start to Monday morning, with some freezing patches of fog but also plenty of sunshine.

“Rain and strong winds moving to the southwest.”

Forecasters added: “Another cold night for many, with widespread frost and some freezing fog patches.

“Temperatures are rising in the far southwest as cloud cover and winds increase.”

They expected the temperature to drop to -3 degrees Celsius Scotland and southern Waleswith, inter alia London And Exeter I want to be at 0C.

A wet day is also forecast for tomorrow.

The Met Office said: “Rain in central and eastern areas will largely die out, with sunny spells developing quite widespread after patchy fog clears across central and southern England.

Looking at Wednesday it said: “Some patchy rain or showers across coastal areas on Wednesday, and Northern Ireland on Thursday.

“Otherwise largely dry and regular with some clear or sunny spells. Temperatures around average.

Heavy on weekends snow fell across parts of Cumbria, with many waking up to a total blackout.”

We had a little more snow than expected

Pictures showed snow-covered meadows as cars drove along icy roads in Nenthead.

Snow covered the ground as far south as Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, where camels looked out of place.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: “We had slightly more snow than expected.

Heavy rain is also falling across the country, with motorists fighting their way through water on Bognor’s Shripney Road.
