A YELLOW warning has been issued for heavy rain across western Scotland, sparking fears of flooding and travel chaos.

The forecaster gave yellow weather rain warning from 6pm on Sunday to 9pm on Monday for parts of western Scotland.

There's a small chance that houses and businesses could be swamped by the downpour.

Floods can also cause train and bus traffic disruptions delays – and even some cancellations.

Wet roads will make it difficult the drivingwith some road closures possible.

And several rural communities in the Highlands could be cut off by flooding.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office David Hayter said: “There is likely to be some persistent rain across the north of Scotland on Sunday – perhaps wintry at times for Shetland.

“The rain will slowly move north through Sunday before turning and returning south later on Monday.

“Some southern parts of the warning area may see a drier period for a while on Monday and there is some uncertainty as to how far north the rain will reach.

“40-75mm of rain could fall quite widely in the warning areas, but there is potential for 120-170mm in the wettest areas, this may be most likely over parts of Argyll, Lochaber and Wester Ross.”

It will be colder in northern areas next week with showers, the Met Office added.

These will become wintry at times, especially at higher elevations, but possibly at lower levels as the week progresses.

There is a chance that wintry conditions will develop more widely in the second half of next week as rain moves up from the south for a while.

It comes as the Met Office warns of snow in two parts of Britain – with a major freeze set to spread throughout the country within days.
