British weather: Met Office warns of high winds of 80mph causing travel chaos as Britons are urged to stay safe

BRTIS has been urged to stay safe as winds of 80mph set to wreak havoc amid yellow weather warnings from the Met Office.

Meteorologists today issued three wind warnings covering large parts of Britain as severe storms are forecast to develop traffic chaos and disruption.

There is a yellow weather warning for wind Scotland this morning from 10am to 8pm.

The same notice has been issued to the Scottish Highlands, but comes into effect from 11am and ends at 4pm.

In Northern IrelandA yellow wind warning also applies to the east coast from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Met Office meteorologists warn: “Strong gusty winds are likely to cause some disruption to travel and infrastructure.”

Those affected have been warned to expect a series of delays when traveling on public transport and roads.

Meanwhile, people in coastal areas have been urged to stay safe amid the risk of spray and large waves.

There is also a chance of power outages and disruption of other services if the storm continues into the evening.

Temperatures will remain mild with most of Britain staying in double figures today.

The Met Office predicts sunny spells with intermittent cloud cover for much of the south, lasting into the afternoon.

Heavy rain is forecast from north-east England to south-west Wales tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the southeast remains drier with a foggy morning.

It will remain dry on Tuesday, but stormier conditions will start again on Wednesday with heavy storms in the northwest.

Thursday will bring more changeable weather.

It comes after Storm Jocelyn lashed the UK several days ago with winds of 90mph, leading to flight cancellations and a 'do not travel' warning after five deaths.

Amber And yellow wind warnings were in force for a large part of the country.

What to expect

According to the Met Office;

  • Some bus and train services have been affected and some journeys are taking longer
  • Some delays are expected in road, rail, air and ferry transport
  • Some power outages and other services at short notice
  • Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on vulnerable routes and bridges
