The toddler's loved ones reportedly jumped into the waterway to try to save him, but were unable to.

Water rescue teams and emergency services then rushed to the river after receiving panicked calls about the horrors.

Today, the Kent and West Mercia Police Search and Rescue team and Metropolitan Police Marine Recovery dogs will join the operation.

Assistant Chief Constable Michaela Kerr said: “We have had tremendous support from the local community and we thank everyone who helped with our investigation.

“This is an extremely difficult time for the family, our thoughts are very much with them and we continue to support them.

“A number of teams from across the force and region assisted us during this operation and our priority remains locating the young boy. Thank you to all our officers and specialist teams on the ground who continue to work extremely hard in very difficult circumstances for everyone involved.”

A man was also taken to hospital as a precaution following the tragic incident on the day the toddler went missing.

Police have urged people not to visit the scene due to fears of rising water levels and safety risks.

This came after they received a number of requests to provide support in the search.

Local Alison Clay said she was walking her dog when she saw emergency services flooding the river.

She said BBC: “After 5 p.m. a helicopter flew around and soon many emergency vehicles arrived.

'There is still a drone in the air. I only know what I've read Facebook But it sounds terrible.”

Another resident said they couldn't go to the river tonight, adding: “The parents must be absolutely beside themselves.”

Leicestershire Police initially said the boy was three, before confirming he was two.

At 10.30pm on the day of the incident the force said: “Earlier this evening officers were called to the River Soar in Leicester after reports that a child fell into the water.

“The child, a two-year-old boy, was with family when he fell into the river, unfortunately despite the best efforts of those on the scene at the time the child was not located.

“Emergency services arrived at the scene just after 5pm and a search and rescue operation began in Aylestone Meadows, near Marsden Lane.

“A man has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

“The operation is ongoing and will continue tomorrow morning with additional specialist teams.”

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said at around 8pm: “This is a police-led incident.

“We can confirm that we were alerted at 5.05pm and water rescue teams are still on site.”
