by Christopher Nolan The training was interrupted by an unwanted movie review.
At the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Wednesday, January 3, Nolan received the Best Director award for his film Oppenheimer and told the funny story during his speech.
“I was in my platoon. I’m dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my movies and said, ‘Has anyone seen this? Those are a few hours of my life that I will never get back!” he said.
Nolan continued to wax poetic about his love for film criticism – something that social media has changed, where anyone can voice their opinion on film. He continued about his Peloton criticism: “When [film critic] Rex Reed takes your film seriously, it doesn’t ask you to train! In today’s world, where opinions are everywhere, there is a kind of idea that film criticism is being democratized, but I think that the critical appreciation of films should not be an instinct, but a profession.
Nolan noted that he has an appreciation for film criticism, which can be fraught for directors, though he clearly doesn’t prefer to do it with a little sweat. If he’s not in his platoon, he usually gets a warning if a bad review is waiting. “A question we’re always asked is, ‘Do we read reviews?’ Let’s start with the fact that I’m British,” he said. “At a typical family gathering, family members say to me, ‘You know, Christopher. You probably shouldn’t open it The guard Today.'”
While Nolan didn’t provide any details about which Peloton instructor it was or which classes he prefers, Us hopes it’s the Movie Buff (aka rides with a specific movie theme). He also did not reveal which of his twelve films wasted his instructor’s few hours.
It would be a surprise if his latest film, Oppenheimer, which was released in July 2023, it was because the film received mostly positive responses. The star-studded historical epic followed J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) who, along with a group of scientists, led the Manhattan Project to create the atomic bomb. The film grossed over $955 million dollars worldwide and was combined with the same weekend release as Barbie — the Barbenheimer double feature became a cultural phenomenon.
Oppenheimer has also held its own critically with rave reviews from film critics and this awards season the film has been nominated for eight Golden Globes, including Best Picture and Drama.
