Daylesford pub crash: Driver’s side of the story revealed for the first time

The lawyer for the 66-year-old driver who crashed into a busy Victorian country pub, killing five members of two young families, has told what happened that night.

Witnesses at the scene claimed the driver had suffered a medical episode with ‘glassy’ eyes.

Tests found the driver had no drugs or alcohol his system.

On Wednesday, the man’s lawyer confirmed that the horror incident was caused by a medical episode and that he remains in hospital.

“The 66-year-old driver’s lawyer says his client is an insulin-dependent diabetic and needed immediate treatment by paramedics on the scene,” according to Nine reporter Gillian Lantouris wrote.

‘He is deeply saddened. He has been questioned by detectives and remains in hospital.”

The Daylesford pub, about a 90 minute drive northwest of Melbourne was packed with hundreds of customers in the hours before the crash due to the unofficial long weekend before Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup bank holiday.

Victoria Police confirmed four people died at the scene of the crash and another in hospital in the hours afterwards. More people were injured.

One woman told Daily Mail Australia the horror of seeing the car drive towards the busy pub.

‘It was just an explosion. Bodies were everywhere,” she said.

Among those who died were a young boy and a girl.

A man and a woman in their 30s and a woman in her 40s were also killed.

A second six-year-old boy broke both his legs and was left fighting for his life, but has since recovered and is in a stable condition.

Two men, aged 43 and 38, a 35-year-old woman and an 11-month-old baby boy were injured in the crash and are also said to be in a stable condition.

Police said the victims belonged to two families who knew each other and were not local residents, but visitors who were “just going about their daily lives… on a beautiful sunny afternoon.”
