Delhi weather update: The national capital continued to witness thick fog as temperatures dropped in the city, reducing visibility in several areas. Traffic movement in the city was also affected by the fog in the region.

IMD issues red alert

The city recorded the coldest night of the season for the second day in a row on Sunday with the minimum temperature in Aya Nagar dropping to 3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert due to cold and dense fog in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad.

The national capital witnessed the first cold wave day of the season on Friday, which the IMD recorded when the minimum temperature dipped below 4 degrees Celsius.

“A very dense layer of fog extends over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Passengers on highways should drive with extreme caution and only with fog lamps,” the IMD said from the X handle.

The weather bureau also said that red alert has been issued in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and yellow alert has also been issued in Rajasthan.

Delhi Airport issues traffic advisory

In the meantime, Delhi airport has issued an advisory for passengers, asking them to contact airlines before traveling.

“Due to dense fog, flight operations at Delhi airport may be affected. Passengers are requested to contact the concerned airline for updated flight information,” the airport authority said in a message on 'X'. “Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” it added.

Earlier on Sunday, poor visibility and dense fog across northern India affected IndiGo's flight operations, causing inconvenience to passengers traveling by air.

IndiGo Airlines said in a statement: “Due to poor visibility and dense fog in northern India, IndiGo's flight operations were affected on January 14, 2024. This had a cascading effect on our activities throughout the day. Our staff kept the passengers informed of all delays and cancellations at the airports and did everything they could to facilitate the passengers. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers.”

Restrictions imposed on construction activities

Taking preventive measures, the Delhi Transport Department has ordered a ban on the construction and use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers with immediate effect. The ban remains in effect until further notice.

As the ban came into effect, inspection of vehicles along Ghazipur and Apsara borders in the national capital was intensified.

Schools reopen today

The Delhi Education Department has ordered the reopening of schools in physical learning mode for all classes including nursery, KG and primary classes from today.

The Ministry of Education has issued an order in this regard, stating: “Further to Order No. PS/DE/2024/14 dated 07/01/2024, it is directed that all government, government aided and recognized private schools must resume physical classes at their respective schools with effect from 15/01/2024 (Monday). ). This also includes the nursery, KG and primary school classes.”

Meanwhile, in view of the chilling weather conditions, it has been directed that schools will not conduct classes before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m.

“As a precautionary measure in view of the prevailing foggy conditions, no school (including double shift schools) shall commence classes before 9 am and hold classes after 5 pm until further instructions,” the order further read.
