A company has launched perhaps Britain's most luxurious sweet treat – a donut made with gold.

British donut company Project D has created a donut filled with a molten Caramac-like filling and covered with 24-karat edible gold leaf for Valentine's Day.

The doughnut, covered in 24-carat edible gold leaf, costs a whopping £29.95 and is only available for delivery on February 13, 14 and 15.

Called the Golden mega heart, the dessert has a diameter of 30 cm and weighs 2.2 kg – the size of a decent toaster.

The pastry has a Belgian white chocolate base, is covered in gold leaf and filled with a replica of Nestlé's beloved golden Caramac bar.

Caramac was taken off the market in November, but now Project D, which runs pop-ups and stores across the country, is letting fans indulge in some sweet nostalgia.

The donut company, which was founded by a group of friends in 2018, claims their Caramac recreation is so good it could rival the original recipe.

Project D said: 'Iinspired by the exciting texts of Bruno Mars, pImagine a dazzling heart-shaped treat, gleaming in radiant gold, reflecting the allure of 'Twenty Four Karat Magic'.

'Its mesmerizing presence promises to take your V. Day celebrations to the next level.

“This showstopper is edible gold, not just some measly substance, but we're talking all-gold armor, a shield of pure opulence.

'Imagine handing this to the person you love, sharing a moment, sinking your teeth into the fluffy softness of the artisan dough, while the molten liquid Caramac center overflows with golden crunch on your lips'.

The treat has a variety of additional chocolate toppings, including KitKat, Lion and Malteser and Terry's Chocolate Orange White bites, plus golden Belgian chocolate callets and caramel crunch balls.

The Golden Mega Heart lasts a whopping six hours and can be purchased online, but is only available in 'very limited quantities'.

It's only available for delivery on February 13-15, but cheaper versions are also available from €15.95.

Project D was founded in 2018 by 3 friends who shared a passion and love for food.

Their main inspiration came from the 24-hour demand for donuts in the US – in New York alone there is a donut shop on every block!

Project D has since successfully worked with hundreds of companies including British Airways, Brewdog, Coca-Cola, Amazon, Love Island and Sainsbury's.
