Donald Faison has a hopeful message for fans of Scrubs.
“We’re trying to work one out Scrubs situation,” Faison, 49, says exclusively We weekly while promoting NBC’s Extended family. “I think in the near future everyone will be happy if you have one Scrubs fan.”
Faison, who is Dr. Chris Turk, who starred in the series, explains that there are a few logistical issues that need to be resolved before he returns. But despite some kinks, he’s ‘sure’ Zach Braff and colleague Scrubs castmates “will follow suit.”
“We’re trying,” he says. “We’re really trying.”
The series, which ran for nine seasons from 2001 and 2010, chronicles the lives of employees at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. The cast, which was also included John C. McGinley, Sarah Chalke And Judy Reyeshas previously hinted at a return to the show, but nothing came of it.
In June 2022, the cast and crew reunited during an ATX Festival panel, with Faison noting that they would “love to work together again.”
“It’s just really hard,” Faison explained. “It can’t be a full season of a show; it should be a movie or something like that where you can only spend a few months on it. Everyone is doing things.”
Faison also pointed out that creator and showrunner Bill Lawrence would have to be involved before everyone could return, but joked, “This guy will never be free again.”
Lawrence, meanwhile, said during the festival that he would be interested in a revival, adding: “We’re going to do it because we’re lucky that people care. We enjoy spending time together from head to toe. If you ever have an excuse to work with people you’d want to spend time with anyway, run to it… It’s worth seeing for me Neil [Flynn] back in that jumpsuit.”
While fans wait in anticipation Scrubs‘ return, they can still get a weekly Faison fix on NBC’s Extended family. The sitcom follows Jim (Jon Cryer) and ex-wife Julia (Abigail Spencer) navigating a co-parenting relationship while moving on with her new fiancé, Trey (Faison).
If Extended family returns for a new season, Faison shares that Braff, 48, will appear on the show.
“It won’t just be one scene. He says, ‘I want a real character on the show, I want to come back.’ Us. “So we’re trying to figure that out.”
Extended family airs on NBC Tuesdays at 8:30 PM ET and streams on Peacock the next day.
