A five-month-old baby was killed, while two female victims were seriously injured and another three people were moderately injured.

Local reports claim that some of the victims are British tourists, but local Police have not yet confirmed their nationality.

Officials at Yaiza town hall said the driver is a 23-year-old British woman living on the island.

They said: “The victims of the multi-casualty accident include an infant who died and six people who suffered varying degrees of injuries.

“The person who caused the accident is a 23-year-old woman of British descent living in Playa Blanca.

“She is being investigated because she showed signs of being under the influence at the scene alcohol And drugs.”

“The investigation, led by the local police of Yaiza, remains open. Yaiza City Hall expresses its solidarity with the victims and their families.”

It is understood the driver of the car told police she had a steering problem.

The horror accident took place on a bend of a main road near the Aqualava water park and the four-star HL hotel.

Witnesses told police they thought she had gone too fast, but there was no record of alcohol or drugs on their accounts.

It is not yet known whether the British driver has been formally arrested and is in custody, or whether she has undergone a breath test and had to take an on-site drug test.

A regional government-run emergency coordination center said: “The incident occurred at 6:22 pm local time.

“A five-month-old baby died and six people suffered various injuries.

“During the on-site response, two women were found to have suffered serious, multiple injuries… and were taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in the island capital Arrecife.

“Two other women with various moderate multiple injuries were also taken to the same hospital, along with two men who had injuries to their lower extremities.

“Seven land ambulances were sent to the scene and an air ambulance was also mobilized due to the severity of the incident, along with a doctor and nurse from Playa Blanca Health Centre.

“The other responders included firefighters, civil protection workers, local police and civil guards.”

Yaiza Town Hall, which is responsible for Playa Blanca, said: “Yaiza Town Hall expresses its solidarity with the victims and their families after a number of people were run over in Playa Blanca this evening.

“Our total respect for the ongoing investigation by the authorities and our gratitude to the security forces and first responders involved in tackling this tragic incident.”

Playa Blanca, White Beach in Spanish, is Lanzarote’s southernmost town, about a 40-minute drive from the island’s airport.

The coastline around Playa Blanca is essentially one large, six mile wide bay that is then divided into three smaller, but still large, bays.

Just last month, an 83-year-old British tourist died after being run over by a bus in Lanzarote.

She was taken to hospital in a ‘critical’ condition on February 21 after being hit by the vehicle in the popular resort of Costa Teguise and stabilized at the scene.

And last September, two Britons were among the seven injured when a British holidaymaker burst into a crowded Spanish cafe in his rental car on the neighboring Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

The tragedy occurred when the car left the road and crashed into the outdoor restaurant in the tourist hotspot Corralejo.

The victims included a four month old girl.
