A high-speed police chase in two allegedly stolen cars has led to the arrest of seven people in Melbourne.

At around 2 a.m. on Friday, patrolling officers spotted a white BMW with allegedly stolen number plates driving at high speed on the Monash Freeway near Dandenong.

The assistance of a police helicopter was called in to track down the luxury vehicle and tracked it to Narre Warren, where an allegedly stolen gray Mercedes gave chase and was clocked at speeds of up to 150 km/h.

A short time later, the BMW was dumped in Mullum Mullum Tunnel, with the driver and passengers fleeing in the Mercedes.

It is alleged that both vehicles were recently stolen in major burglaries.

The police deployed stop sticks – specially designed spike kits designed to penetrate tires and deflate them in 20 to 30 seconds – in Heidelberg.

As the car passed through the roadblock, two wheels were removed, but the vehicle did not stop.

The chase eventually came to an end Eastern Fwy in Kew, where police arrest the seven occupants of the Mercedes.

Footage shows several police cars blocking the highway, which was closed for a few hours but has since been reopened.

No one was injured in the incident and police say the car’s occupants are assisting them in their investigation.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and to allow extra travel time on Friday morning.
