Luke Staton, prosecuting, said other protesters gained access to the roof and “slowly rappelled down”.

A Section 14 condition was imposed – allowing the demo to go ahead, but at a fixed location where guests could access the InterContinental Hotel in Mayfair, it was said.

Thunberg was informed, the court heard, and warned more than once against non-compliance arrest would result.

Mr Staton said: “She said she was staying where she was and that's why she was arrested.”

Four others were also detained.

The prosecutor added: “The Crown's case is that all five of these defendants took part in a public meeting.

“They knew or should have known that a Section 14 condition had been imposed and all of them failed to comply.”

The five have pleaded not guilty to breaching the order.

The trial at Westminster Magistrates' Court continues today.
