Elon Musk’s tweet has gone viral.

Elon Musk has always been in the news for his hot take on various issues. This time, the Tesla boss has weighed in on a conspiracy theory. In recent months, a conspiracy theory claiming that birds are not real and that the animals are actually government drones used to spy on the general public has been gaining popularity on social media. The theory admits that birds were real animals, but claims that U.S. officials “forced the entire species to extinction in the 20th century” and “all these real birds were replaced by surveillance drones.” Twitter owner Elon Musk has now expressed his opinion on the matter.

Musk shared a tweet on the microblogging site that said, “This conspiracy theory that birds are actually government spy drones is…completely false.” Along with the tweet, Musk attached a photo of a bird with text on it that read, “Birds are your friend and harmless… Don’t be alarmed or mind your words when you’re in range of a cute, beautiful fluffy bird.”

All about the Birds Aren’t Real movement

The conspiracy theory started with a man named Peter McIndoe. During an interview with The New York Time last year, McIndoe said the movement began during a women’s march in Memphis, Tennessee, in January 2017, when he put up a banner that read “Birds Aren’t Real.” He also admitted that the “Birds Aren’t Real” movement started as a joke after he saw a group of President Donald Trump supporters protesting at the rally.

A clip of McIndo’s bird-drone diatribe quickly went viral. “Birds aren’t real” graffiti and billboards started popping up all over cities.

McIndoe said of the movement, “It takes this concept of misinformation and almost builds a little bit of a safe space to come together and laugh about it, rather than fear it. And accept the madness of it all and be a bird watcher for a moment in time when everything is so crazy.

While the movement has held rallies across the country, it is essentially an online prank. Interestingly, the movement’s official TikTok account has more than 850,000 followers. The hashtag Birds Are’t Real has been viewed more than 350 million times. The Instagram page has almost 400,000 followers and the official Twitter account has almost 100,000 followers.
