Expert reveals amazing hack that will rid your carpets of pet stains – and it only costs 65p

While dogs are often considered by many to be man’s (and woman’s) best friend, for others they are a nightmare when it comes to mess.

Dogs can be responsible for a litany of stains, from muddy paw prints to puddles of urine.

These can be easily removed when it comes to wood, tile and linoleum floors.

But when this mess is made on carpets, it becomes much more difficult to remove – which can lead to potential odors and stains.

Now cleaning experts at vacuum cleaner maker GTech, in Worcester, have revealed an easy hack to clean up the mess your dog left behind – with baking soda.

While dogs can be great roommates, they also tend to make a mess, but using baking soda can help the cleaning process (stock image)

You may already have some in your kitchen cupboards, but if not, it usually costs around 65 pence and is easy to find in supermarkets.

If you have a stain on your carpet, it is best to address it as soon as possible.

If you are confronted with a liquid, for example urine, you should first spray cold water on it.

Next, grab some paper towels and use them to soak up as much of the water you sprayed on the stain as possible.

It is at this point that you will start using your bicarbonate of soda. Simply sprinkle the white powder over the affected area before leaving it on for at least an hour.

After the bicarb has set, you need to vacuum the carpet.

Now repeat the cleaning process as many times as necessary, until the stain and associated odor are gone.

The experts noted that while you may want to clean the area a few times, make sure you don’t rub the carpet fibers too vigorously.

This is because being too heavy can damage the fiber, which in turn can damage the finish.

When it comes to tackling muddy stains, the process is similar to wet stains, with one crucial difference.

According to the cleaning experts, you should let the mud dry before doing anything, then it will be easier to scrape off the excess with a blunt knife.

Then follow the same process as for wet stains, spray the stain with water before absorbing it, then sprinkle with baking soda and vacuum the stain and clean if necessary.

The experts recommend using additional products for extra stubborn stains, for example white vinegar or a carpet cleaner. However, they note that you should make sure the product is suitable for your specific carpet.
