It’s also hurtful for some to hear that such websites can’t make money, even though they’re constantly reminded of how much certain forms of feminism sell. “Barbie,” which grossed more than $1 billion at the box office, had the patriarchy as its villain.

“The ‘Barbie’ movie wouldn’t exist without feminist blogs,” says Anna Holmes, 50, the founder and editor of Jezebel. “Many of the topics covered on sites like Jezebel and Feministing, and many of the writers and editors who worked on those sites, have now been incorporated into mainstream media.”

Since starting in their Los Angeles apartment in December 2020, they have amassed more than 40,000 weekly listeners and approximately 8,000 paying Patreon subscribers. Their subscriber levels range from “Bestie Vibes Only” for $15 a month to “Sweet Baby Angel” for $5, which brings in about $40,000 monthly, which they say they also used to pay for their two editors, manager and social media lead to pay.
