In a podcast recorded last Monday – the day before she had surgery – the former royal family admits that she almost missed her appointment because she didn’t want to travel to London on such a hot day.

She was nagged by her sister and says it appears the cancer was “discovered in time.”

The Duchess says the experience has given her a new zest for life and is determined to use her position to encourage people to get screened for all types of cancer.

Of her taking the time to focus on herself, Mr Morgan said: ‘It is typical of her to immediately try to turn such a negative experience into a positive one, but very unusual for her to use her amazingly selfless instincts and instead focus on helping themselves.

“I’m really glad she is though, because the world is a better place with a healthy, vibrant Sarah Ferguson in it.”

A spokesperson for the Duchess announced on Sunday that she has recently been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and has undergone successful surgery.

She recuperates at Royal Lodge in Windsor, where she lives with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew.

The Mail understands that the Duchess informed the King and Queen of her condition before going to hospital on Tuesday.

She underwent several hours of surgery at London’s private King Edward VII’s Hospital before being discharged on Saturday and will recover at home for five to six weeks.

Speaking on Tea Talks, a new podcast she co-hosts, Sarah said: ‘It was after a public holiday, I live in the Windsor area, it was a hot day, I didn’t feel like going to London. Easy to put it off.

‘My sister from Australia is amazing and I normally do as she says because she gets so grumpy.

She said, “No, I want you to go.” Thank you, Jane.’

The mammogram picked up an indication of an abnormality, so staff investigated further using a special dye that is injected into the patient’s vein before getting an MRI scan to get a clearer picture of the possible cancer.

The Duchess said: ‘I went to the Royal Free Hospital [in Hampstead, north London] with the NHS, great job there. A very big shout-out to the NHS.’

She added, “I want everyone who listens to this podcast to get checked, get screened, go do it.

“Don’t say it won’t happen to you, it doesn’t matter if you feel good. Cancer can be silent, such a silent little hidden thing. Get screened, get checked. Do not wait.’

Sarah said she would use the experience as a catalyst to change her life, whether it’s climbing mountains or trying to make the most of every grandmother’s moment, adding, “I consider this a real gift for me to change my life.

‘To cherish myself. To stop trying to improve everyone.’

The Duchess is a grandmother of three children. Princess Beatrice has a 21-month-old daughter, Sienna, while Princess Eugenie is mother to two and four-week-old Ernest.
