The German athletics star, dubbed 'the sexiest athlete in the world', reveals she has turned down six-figure contract offers because she 'doesn't feel comfortable' – despite earning just £600 a month!

German athletics star Alicia Schmidt has revealed how she turned down a huge sponsorship deal worth 'high six figures' because she 'didn't feel comfortable' – despite earning a modest income.

The 25-year-old competes for her country in the 400 meters and was part of the German relay team that traveled to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, although she did not compete.

Schmidt – who has been called the 'sexiest athlete alive' – has a huge social media following with 4.9 million followers on Instagram and 2 million on TikTok, where she regularly posts photos and clips of her preparation for races and track events .

She has also shown the glamorous side of her life, which has seen her attend fashion shows, PR events and glitzy holidays.

However, Schmidt revealed that she is selective about the brand partnerships she signs up for.

She is a representative of Hugo Boss, but claimed last year that her main salary comes from German sports foundation Sporthilfe, which pays her just £600 (€700) a month – and only because she plays for her national team, according to Image.

But despite that modest base salary, Schmidt has been vocal about turning down a lucrative endorsement from a “well-known” company, saying she must be “100 percent behind” a brand before joining it.

She told Bild: 'Two months ago I received an offer from a well-known brand. But I wasn't 100 percent behind it. I don't feel comfortable with that. That would have been mid to high six figures for a campaign.”

Schmidt has previously spoken about an athlete's struggle to generate a regular income, saying that the money she gets for competing is not enough to live on.

She has spoken about the lack of regular income for athletes and how money from competitions is not enough to survive

“In principle I have to say that it is not easy for most German track and field athletes to make a living from the sport,” she told the German publication.

'Of course there is money to be made from competitions. Most competitions don't make you any money. Personally, I wouldn't be able to survive on these amounts alone, because many competitions still involve travel and hotel costs, which are not always covered.

'Most of us study part-time to build up a second source of income, or even have mini-jobs that we do on the side.'

Schmidt generates money from her huge following on Instagram, but has also pursued interests outside of athletics.

She reportedly studied media and communications management on a virtual course to give herself more opportunities outside of sports.

Her accolades as a runner include a silver medal at the U20 European Athletics Championships in the 4x400m relay – before taking gold in the same competition and event three years later.

She went viral while working as a fitness coach at Borussia Dortmund after beating defender Mats Hummels in a 400m race

In addition to athletics, Schmidt has also used her knowledge of nutrition and fitness in other areas. She was appointed fitness coach at German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund for the 2020-2021 season.

During that time, she starred in a viral clip with 6 million views in which she raced over 400 meters against Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and won with ease.

During the same interview, she was asked about the chances of her beating PSG's famous speed merchant Kylian Mbappe in a race.

She replied, “It depends on the distance. I have no chance in the 100 meters because I am not the fastest. But certainly at 400 meters. I'm almost certain I can beat any footballer.'
