Driver on the tarmac of Hamburg airport in standoff with police

Hamburg Airport in Germany canceled all flights Saturday night after authorities responded to a man believed to be armed who drove his vehicle onto the tarmac and parked near a plane.

The man fired at least one shot into the air, Hamburg police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün said in a statement. an interview on social media.

The driver is accompanied by an underage passenger and police said they were trying to contact him.

Passengers on board the plane near the vehicle were evacuated, police said.

An airport spokeswoman, Katja Bromm, said in an email that police responded to the airport at 8:24 p.m. local time, requesting that the takeoff and landing be halted.

Twenty-seven flights have since been canceled, she added, affecting about 3,200 passengers.
