Only the beginning! A month after finding success on Netflix, Heart stopper was given a two-season extension that will continue to focus on Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson’s (Kit Connor) blossoming romance.
“We were thrilled with the global response to Heart stopper and I can’t wait to continue the story for two more seasons,” said a statement from the creator Alice Osman read in May 2022.
Based on Oseman’s graphic novels of the same name, the groundbreaking series explores the growing bond between high school students Charlie and Nick. After being yelled at at school recently, Charlie finds himself in love with his new friend Nick. For his part, the popular rugby player begins to question his sexuality due to his bond with Charlie.
Prior to the show’s debut, Oseman talked about the process of finding the right actors to take on the iconic roles. “We wanted young actors, we wanted authentic casting, [and] we clearly needed talented people. So we knew it was going to be a tough, tough job. But somehow they found their way to us,” Oseman told Netflix tudum in April 2022, noting that Locke and Connor’s script sealed the deal. “They did the scene leading up to the first kiss.”
The writer added: “We already knew they were both really talented actors, but we needed to know if the dynamic would work, if there was chemistry and if they could carry Nick and Charlie’s romance. And they broke it. It was as if Nick and Charlie had come to life in front of me.”
That was also important to Oseman Heart stopper was light-hearted when it came to LGBTQ representation. “There’s a lot of queer content on TV right now, but it’s definitely for adults. A lot of queer stories are still very serious or focused on trauma,” she said before delving into the show’s happy moments. “I always think that a trope is a trope for a reason. Tropes can feel overused. But if it features marginalized characters, you probably haven’t seen that as often as you think.”
Connor, whose character comes out as bisexual, praised the series for giving young fans an opportunity to see themselves on screen.
“One of the biggest motivations is the lack of representation for bisexual characters, especially male bisexual characters. There really aren’t that many [on screen]though I know Sex education has a strong masculine bisexual character. But you know, this show is very much focused on that,” the Rocketman actor told Weekly entertainment in May 2022. “For example, one of the biggest storylines is Nick exploring his sexuality. I suppose one of the challenges of a show like this is that it’s never a one size fits all thing.”
The native of England continued: “We really tried our best to be as inclusive and representative as possible. but at the same time everyone’s experience in life is different. We tried really hard to portray that and create a safe place for the queer community in particular.”
