Hilary Duff admitted she struggled writing her children’s books.

The actress, who shared that her daughter Banks recently gave her a very grown-up birthday card, promoted her latest offering My Little Sweet Boy on The Drew Barrymore Show for the episode that aired Monday.

The talk show host told her guest that she was a big fan of her books.

“I still don’t feel like a writer, but I really enjoy writing,” the How I Met Your Father star admitted.

‘It’s such a vulnerable place. And it’s hard to sit down and get in the zone and do it. Especially with motherhood, sitting down to write feels like a selfish moment,” she said.

Hilary is mother to son Luca, 11, from her first marriage to Mike Comrie. She shares Banks, five, and Mae, two, with her husband Matthew Koma.

The author’s first book, My Little Brave Girl, was written when the busy actress returned to work, leaving her four-month-old daughter at home.

My Sweet Little Boy is a look back at her experience with Luca when she became a mother for the first time at the age of 25.

‘I discovered how to be a mother. I knew absolutely nothing,” she admitted.

‘I didn’t have a friend who had a child. It’s so scary,” the Meet Your Tooth Fairy actress recalled.

“But I’ll tell you, Luca looks back now, because he’s old enough, and he sees me doing things with the girls and he says, ‘It wasn’t like that with me,’ and I’m like, ‘I sorry.”

Since both Drew and Hilary spent much of their childhood in front of a camera, they bonded over what it was like for them to be rejected from a job at such a young age.

“That’s a little harder when you have a public job,” Hilary said of her experience.

‘There have been so many times where I felt like a loser, that I didn’t get the job, or that I was standing still.

“I had to fill my life with things that were real and that was enough at that moment.”

Drew agreed, but also found a silver lining, explaining, “I appreciated what it gave me, which was the idea that there was enough room for everyone and there was no need to be competitive because there really is enough room for everyone. ‘

The ET: The Extra Terrestrial star also said she would never list the parts she didn’t get “because I don’t want the person who ended up doing it to feel weird.”
