Hoda KotbHis daughter didn't understand why Travis Kelce lost his cool with the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs Andy Reid during Super Bowl LVIII.
“One of the things they didn't like happened on the sideline and my daughter asked when Travis Kelce pushed his coach,” Kotb, 59, said during the Monday, Feb. 12 episode of Today with Hoda and Jenna. “My daughter said, 'Why did he do that?' Like, why did he push that older man?'”
As Kotb's eldest daughter Haley, 6, popped the question, the talk show host explained to both of her daughters that Kelce, 34, was “frustrated that he wasn't in the game” after the Chiefs fumbled the ball. (Kotb is also the mother of 3-year-old daughter Hope.)
“But all a little kid saw was [a] strong man pushing an older man,” Kotb noted, with co-host Jenna Bush Hager agreeing.
Bush Hager, 42, said she had a similar reaction to Haley when she saw the tense interaction between Reid, 65, and Kelce.
“I was the Haley of that situation, I kept asking [husband] Henry, 'What's going on here?'” she explained. “You want to be a team and part of being a team is respecting the coach. It's sportsmanship. And that's what I tried to teach my children.”
The cohosts shared that their daughters became interested in watching Kelce and his team this season because of the tight end's romance with Taylor Swift. They noted that none of their children had seen these types of emotions during a match before.
“Yeah, and it's weird because I don't think that many young girls have been involved in soccer until this game,” Kotb said. “I don't know if my daughters would have watched it.”
Kelce had a few words with Reid after following along on the couch for a moment Isiah Pacheco's fumble. Kelce grabbed Reid's arm and yelled at him, making the intense moment go viral. Despite the bickering, the Chiefs brought home their second straight championship, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22.
During the post-game presser, both Kelce and Reid were asked about the moment. Kelce hinted that he wanted to keep the duo's conversation to himself.
“Oh, did you see that?” he joked during a postgame interview. “I'll keep it between us unless my microphone comes on tells the world, but I just told him how much I love him.
Reid, in turn, also gave a light-hearted answer about the interaction. “He keeps me young,” the coach said of Kelce. “He threw me off balance. Normally I would give him a little bit [back]but I didn't have that [my] feet under me.”
He later confirmed that Kelce wanted to get back into the match and promised Reid that he would score if given the chance.
“What I like is that he likes to play the game and wants to help his team win,” Reid told ESPN. “No matter how many times he encounters me, I will follow him and we understand that. He just threw me off balance.”
