Health authorities in Gaza suggested the victims were shot dead by Israeli forces on Thursday while waiting for an aid delivery.

The Israeli military is investigating the claim.

Previous alleged atrocities in the Israel-Gaza conflict are difficult to fully verify and initial claims have later been questioned.

At least 104 people are currently believed to have been killed and more than 280 injured in the tragedy near Gaza City.

Chilling black and white aerial footage showed huge numbers of people running towards the convoy of trucks, apparently clambering over each other to reach its contents.

Dozens of injured people were rushed to al-Shifa hospital.

The sheer number of patients and the severity of their injuries are said to have left the facility – which is only partially operational – and medical teams overwhelmed.

An Israeli government spokesman initially said victims died when aid trucks driven by Palestinians drove into the swarm of crowds.

Although an Israeli military official later today claimed that the victims were killed in two separate incidents when a convoy of trucks entered northern Gaza from the south along the main coastal road.

He said the first incident occurred when emergency trucks were surrounded by hundreds of people, and dozens were injured or killed in the confusion, either by being trampled or run over by the trucks.

The second incident is said to have occurred hundreds of meters north of the stampede, near the north-south checkpoint.

After the trucks passed the coastal road, people who “posed a threat” approached the Israeli forces, who then opened fire.

The official told a news briefing: “The soldiers fired warning shots into the air and then shot at those who posed a threat and did not move away.

“From our perspective, this is what we understand. We continue to assess the circumstances.”

He rejected death toll figures provided by Palestinian authorities, saying: “I don’t have figures, it was a limited response.”

Gaza’s Health Ministry has rejected the Israeli version of events.

Spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra said the Israeli military’s latest comments indicated that Israel had “pre-plotted to carry out the new crime and massacre” and suggested the death toll could rise.

Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007, said today’s events could jeopardize talks in Qatar hoping to secure both a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages held by militants .

The White House is also investigating reports of Israeli fires and described what unfolded today as a “serious incident.”

A White House National Security Council spokesperson said: “We mourn the loss of innocent lives and recognize the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where innocent Palestinians are just trying to feed their families.

“This underlines the importance of expanding and maintaining the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, including through a possible temporary ceasefire.”

Israel launched its operations in Gaza following an attack by the terror group on southern Israel October 7When militants killed 1,200 people and took about 250 others hostage.

A month’s pause in fighting has been announced as fears grow that only a few dozen hostages remain to be rescued.

At least 30 of the remaining 130 hostages are confirmed dead, but many more may have died under squalid conditions in Hamas’ terror tunnel network.
