THOUSANDS of British households have just weeks left to secure a direct payment of £450 or face missing out for good.

Families with little money can claim the money through the government's Household Support Fund (HSF).

Councils across the country are giving away payments to eligible Brits struggling with money.

The money comes from an £842m pot of aid from the Department for Work and Pensions.

Each council will be allocated a share of the money to distribute to cash-strapped families earning less than £50,000.

Available grants vary depending on location.

Some local authorities make bank transfers, while others provide assistance in the form of food or utility bills.

Brits living in North Yorkshire can receive up to £450 as part of the HSF from this month.

The money is for food, utility bills and other essential household items.

Residents can also get £110 to pay their council tax bills through the income-tested tax relief scheme.

But Brits are urged to hurry as they only have until February 20, 2024 to apply.

It is on a first come, first served basis as the program will close once all funds are gone.

That means you have to be quick if you want to get support.

There are conditions: families must be “in need of urgent financial assistance and not have enough income or savings to cover the eligible costs that the scheme can help with.”

The council said it will accept applications from or on behalf of people experiencing financial difficulties.

But they must be over 16 years old and live in North Yorkshire.

The council says it will try to support as many residents as possible, but wants to provide support to those who need the help most, including:

  • With dependent children
  • With a disability or health problems
  • With at least one person who receives an AOW benefit.
  • Lonely parents
  • Those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, including those living in temporary housing
  • Survivors of domestic violence
  • Leave care or hospital
  • Facing an emergency, such as a recent fire or flood

However, it is on a first come, first served basis as the program will close once all funds are gone.

That means you have to be quick if you want to get support.

According to the municipality's website, applicants will be notified once a decision has been made.

Eligible residents, working age households receiving council tax support, should have received an email from the council.

If your application is approved, you will receive payment by bank transfer to the bank account you specified 10 working days after the date of your claim.

You can apply online via municipality website or call them during office hours.

It comes as thousands of households in the Guildford area were told they would receive up to £400 into their bank accounts.
