I had to have surgery to remove a cyst on my neck after it swelled up – now I warn others to always get their lumps checked

A young woman has gone viral online after she shared a video of herself with a huge cyst on the side of her neck, urging others to get their nodules checked.

Holly Radford, who lives in the UK, said the lump suddenly swelled up within two to three days.

She soon found out she had a benign gill cyst, which Holly says has been present all her life, albeit much smaller.

These types of cysts are present at birth and are usually noncancerous — health care professionals may recommend surgery to remove it, as was the case for Holly.

She made one TikTok video — which has since been viewed by more than seven million people — showing her neck before and after surgery to remove the lump.

Holly wrote the caption “major slay (get your lumps checked”) and hash tagged the word surgery.

The graduate, who is in her 20s, donned a white top and a full face of makeup as she lip synced to Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

She had her head tilted slightly to one side because the cyst was apparently so large that she couldn’t see her head straight ahead.

Holly then posted a clip in TikTok of her in a hospital bed right after surgery.

Dressed in a patient gown, she shows her followers the large scar where her lump was removed. Holly then sticks out her tongue and gives her thumbs up.

Users used the comments to discuss Holly’s lump, and some even drew from their own experiences.

One person wrote, “Omg I hope you are okay! Is it benign? I had thyroid cancer in October. The neck is the last place people look!’

Another said, “I have so many questions, did it come out of nowhere and are you okay?”

Holly also responded to this comment saying “It’s a cyst that has probably been there my whole life but only got big this year!!”

A third wrote, “I had the exact surgery to have a mass removed. It only goes up from here!! Quick recovery!’

In a second video — which has been viewed a whopping five million times — she shared several photos of her with her cyst. She then added some photos showing her healing process.

What is a bifurcated cleft cyst?

A branching cyst is a lump that usually develops in the neck or below the collarbone.

The Cleveland Clinic says they are present at birth. Although they can occur at any age, they are more commonly diagnosed in children.

These types of cysts are usually noncancerous — health care professionals may recommend surgery to remove them.

Over time, the cyst may become more noticeable, but this usually happens when it is infected.

Symptoms

  • A lump or swollen area on your neck that appears when you contract upper respiratory infections
  • Painful lump or swelling – this could be a sign that it is infected
  • Difficulty swallowing food
