The mother – whose name was not revealed in the video – explained what staples people should stock up on at home.

“Carrots, onions, potatoes, celery if possible, cabbage and canned tomatoes,” she noted.

“So you start with those things – and of course it’s helpful to have your dry goods in your pantry so you can just use them, you know your basics like beans, lentils, rice, quinoa, oats,” she added .

“And those things last a long time too,” Rebekah added, saying they don’t rot quickly in the fridge.

And while some other people recommend meal planning as a way to cut costs, the mom took the opposite route.

“You get your staples and then you go to the store and see what’s on sale in terms of your meat and your produce and your fruit,” she said.

“You don’t schedule meals and then have to get those certain things because they might not be on sale this week,” she explained.

The mother listed items to keep on hand for home cooking, including: “base oils: olive oil, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar.’

“I always have molasses because it’s very, very healthy and adds flavor to things, honey, plain yogurt, canned tuna, see if these things are on sale,” she added.

Rebekah also added that her family always had apples, oranges and bananas in the house when they were growing up.
