But within 50 years the establishment was closed and now looks more like a half-finished car park than a respectable holiday destination.

Located in the coastal town of Bajamar in the northeast of the island, the building was completely gutted inside before the doors were slammed shut for good.

Those willing to visit the permanent eyesore will see a building covered in graffiti, devoid of color and containing a dried-up swimming pool.

The only evidence that it is Hotel Neptuno are the giant letters on the side of the building spelling out its name.

Access to the site is reportedly completely gated, with a near-permanent security presence preventing vandals or curious persons from gaining access.

But with views of the coastline, the site is the perfect location to rebuild.

And despite the hotel's neglect for nearly two decades, plans were finally announced last May to begin demolition of the former hotel.

The general director of La Laguna's urban planning department, Santiago Perez, said the property “posed serious health and safety concerns.” Tenerife weekly report.

Mr Perez added that the problems also affected “the living conditions of the surrounding residents”.

However, he assured that this measure “clearly lays the foundation for future development of the northeast coast.”

When Hotel Neptuno closed in 2007, it wasn't because of a lack of customers or competition from other hotels.

Unfortunately, the hotel failed to meet the demands and expectations of its customers.

“The nature of people's expectations changed,” travel company experts explained Moments in the air.

“Northern Europeans, and not just the British, no longer wanted holiday camps.

“They wanted a la carte meals, they wanted air-conditioned rooms – they wanted better.”

Hotel Neptuno was also not helped by the introduction of a new hotel airport on the other side of the island.

It meant vacationers could find the sun elsewhere, and the entire city of Bajamar became lost due to a lack of interest.

Admittedly, it took another thirty years for the hotel to fully feel the impact and manage to drag its way into the mid-2000s.

But it was eventually closed in 2007 when the parent company went bankrupt.
