This hotel is the epitome of fashion.

A five-star luxury hotel designed “in its entirety” by the late designer Karl Lagerfeld has opened its doors in Macau, the Chinese region known as the Las Vegas of Asia.

As the photos show, the German fashion magnate has certainly left his mark on the property.

Lagerfeld worked on the ‘lavish’ hotel – named The Karl Lagerfeld Macau – for several years before he passed away in 2019, and it bears the legacy of his latest interior design project.

A statement says: ‘The designer’s imaginative, inimitable style and ethos are infused with his own DNA, from the architectural elements to the custom-commissioned furniture and art.’

Located within the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau complex, the 271-room hotel features a “spectacular” book lounge stocked with 4,000 volumes, a spa and wellness center with both indoor and outdoor pools, and a restaurant run by the Michelin-starred star award winning chef Jose Avillez. .

The Chanel fashion maven, who died aged 85 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, is said to have conceived the hotel’s design in collaboration with SJM Resorts based on a “sophisticated reinvention of modern chinoiserie fused with traditional craftsmanship.”

Bold colors and patterns meet “tailored silhouettes” in the guestrooms, which are said to show “influences from both classical Chinese design and contemporary Western aesthetics.”

Even “minimal details” such as bathrobes and bedding are said to exude the designer’s “unparalleled creativity”.

The rooms’ custom headboards are inspired by Chinese coins that represent good luck, while porcelain vases are handcrafted in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen and circular room dividers are inspired by traditional round Chinese moon gates.

Specially commissioned furnishings include ‘exquisite’ sculptures by Dutch artist Marcel Wanders and French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, while overhead chandeliers come from Italian brand Terzani.

This design aesthetic is carried through into Jose Avillez’s restaurant, Mesa, which is said to reflect Lagerfeld’s “signature style and favorite colors — geometric patterns, shapes, and lines in black, white, and gold.”

Portuguese chef Avillez has created a menu with a ‘‘farm to table’ philosophy of dining’.

A statement notes: ‘Designed for sharing, some of these dishes are inspired by more traditional flavours, such as the spring piri piri chicken with chips and the crispy suckling pig with chips and orange salad, and others on more contemporary flavours, such as the tempura cone with tuna tartare and spicy soy.’

There is also a wine list that has been “closely developed in collaboration with Portuguese wineries and local distributors, as well as a wide selection of spirits and liqueurs.”

In summary, a statement promises that guests will discover “fashion, luxury and beauty, fused into a unique reflection of Karl’s world.”

It’s not the only hotel that Lagerfeld has helped shape in terms of appearance – rather he designed a luxury apartment in Paris’ famed Hotel de Cillon.

The three-bedroom suite has an array of lavish features, including glass chandeliers and bathrooms clad in marble from floor to ceiling. Lagerfeld dedicated one of the bedrooms to his beloved cat Choupette, who received $1.5 million from the late designer in his will.

The opening of The Karl Lagerfeld Macau coincides with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York that is dedicated to the designer – Karl Lagerfeld: a line of beauty runs until mid-July.

In early May, the 2023 Met Gala had a controversial theme centered around the designer. mAll pointed out that Lagerfeld, who served as Chanel’s creative director from 1983 until his death, had expressed fatphobic, sexist, and anti-immigrant views during his lifetime.
