It’s official – the pub IS therapeutic: almost half of Britons turn to their pub owner for advice (and one in 10 would rather receive tips from bar staff than from their own parents)

Brits are known for their love of the pub, but there’s a lot more to it than just being a place to enjoy a cold pint and a pack of crabs.

Pubs are therapeutic too, according to a recent poll of Brits showing that nearly half of the country have turned to their local pub owner or bar staff for important advice.

The research, by the&me’ appreveals that 48 per cent of Britons say they have relied on staff from their local pub owner for advice and guidance during a difficult time.

One in ten (11 percent) of the 2,000 respondents would rather receive life tips from someone close to them than from their own parents.

About a quarter (24 percent) insist they would rather talk about life matters in the pub than anywhere else.

While more than two in five (45 percent) claim it is a relaxed and safe environment.

A third (33 percent) of gamblers say it’s a place where no judgment is made, while nearly a quarter (23 percent) admit they lose their inhibitions after a drink, making it easier to solicit opinions.

With the average Briton spending as much as two hours a week in the pub, it’s no surprise that three-quarters (76 per cent) believe their neighborhood is a safe place to discuss issues and get impartial advice.

And more than half (52 percent) admit they made a major life decision at the bar.

A third (36 percent) admit to having asked for financial advice in the pub, with the most pressing concerns being savings and investments (40 percent) and advice on mortgages (28 percent) and pensions (25 percent).

No less than 71 percent then followed the financial advice they received in the pub.

One in five (20 per cent) Brits have been persuaded to invest in Crypto in the pub and a further nine per cent have spoken of investing in a friend’s company or even a pyramid scheme.

Other topics that Britons like to discuss in the pub are money (25 percent), political opinions (24 percent), sex (23 percent) and family disputes (19 percent).

Gamblers are also likely to reveal honest thoughts about friends (17 percent), relationship problems (17 percent) and even their salary (12 percent) over a pint or gin and tonic.

Riaan De Bruyn, from &me, said the pub has ‘always been a setting for lively discussions or a quiet heart-to-heart talk’, but warned that ‘not all advice is created equal’.

He added: “It is important to be discerning and careful who we let guide us as wrong advice can lead us down a dangerous path.

Always consider the source, their experience and expertise, and make sure their advice aligns with your values ​​and goals before acting on it.

‘Studies have shown that receiving professional financial advice increases wealth, and ongoing support leads to much better financial results.

“Receiving ready-made advice in the pub cannot replicate this long-term insight and guidance.”
