Jenna Bush Hager remembers a time when she called her brother-in-law, Craig Coyneunder the wrong name – at his own wedding.
The Today with Hoda and Jenna coach, 42, revealed that while giving the toast to twin sister Barbara Bush‘s wedding, she exclaimed, “Welcome to our family, Greg,” instead of Craig.
“I don’t even know what it was,” she recalled of the show’s Monday, December 4, episode. “I’m not sure where it comes from because I know him very well.”
Barbara, 42, and Coyne were married for the first time in October 2018, and again in April 2019. The first small family ceremony was intended to ensure that former President George HW Bush, Barbara and Jenna’s grandfather, could attend. (He died a month later at the age of 94.)
“I already gave it once!” Jenna said over her fluffy toast. “Half the people there said, ‘Did she just give him the wrong name?'”
As she told the story, Jenna pointed out that she was pregnant with her son Hal at the time. “I would just put it out there, my brain wasn’t firing on all cylinders,” she joked. (Jenna shares daughters Mila, 10, Poppy, 8, and Hal, 4, with husband Henry Hager. The couple married in 2008.)
After admission, cohost Hoda Kotb Jenna asked if her brother-in-law forgave her, to which she replied, “I think so.”
Despite the accident, Jenna has remained close to her sister. Last month the two went out to dinner with their parents, Laura Bush and former president George W Bushto celebrate Laura’s 77th birthday and the couple’s 46th wedding anniversary.
After the reunion, Jenna revealed that it was the first time the four of them had eaten together in ten years.
“The four of us went out to dinner and what we realized was, ‘I don’t think the four of us have been together for almost 20 years,'” Jenna said during an episode of the show in November.
Jenna quickly clarified that she had exaggerated, and that it had actually lasted more like “a decade.”
“I’ve had a husband for a long time and we’ve had children for 10 years,” she said. “Barbara has had boyfriends and husbands, etc., etc.”
When Kotb, 59, laughed at the comment and asked Jenna what she meant by it, she explained: “[Barbara] had boyfriends, and then she got married, so that’s it etc.
