Kate Hudson Thinks ‘It’s Hard to Get Male Movie Stars for Rom-Coms’

Kate Hudson extends an invitation to male actors in the industry.

“It’s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,” Hudson, 44, said in the Thursday, January 4, episode The viewnoting that the genre needs more “Marvel guys” to sign on for roles.

When to cohost Sara Haines asked Hudson about the “misstep” between male actors and the appeal of romantic comedy, and Hudson replied, “I think it’s about the writing, and how we invest in telling the story of the writing and the directors.”

Hudson added that if “you look at the classic rom-coms or movies that last forever,” those movies “had the best writers,” citing the late Nora Ephron as an example. “So I think it’s more about the way the studios invest in the talents,” she noted.

When Hudson was asked why she thinks about her beloved 2003 film How to lose a man in 10 days of Matthew McConaughey still resonates with people today, she credited the script.

“To be honest, I think it’s well written. I think there’s kind of a misconception that a romcom should have a certain formula — and it does, there is a formula that works,” she said. “But it also starts with writing.”

For How to lose a man in 10 daysHudson said they went through “several writers” before settling Kristen Buckley, Brian Regan And Burr Sends, and “really made sure we had a great foundation for a script, and then for the cast.” (The film is based on a novel written by Michael Alexander And Jeannie Long.)

When to cohost Sunny Hosin noting that “the cast was pretty good,” Hudson added with a laugh, “We like that McConaughey!”

McConaughey, 54, was known for his roles in several romantic comedies of the 1990s and early 2000s, including How to lose a man in 10 days, The Wedding Planner and more. The Oscar winner previously gave a behind-the-scenes look at the genre in 2020, emphasizing the importance of the chemistry between the leads in a film.

“There’s a lot of improvisation, a lot of chatting. It’s about timing, comedic timing,” he explained in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) at the time. “There is a buoyancy that they are built on, you have to bounce from cloud to cloud. Dance among the raindrops, I always said.”

As for his on-screen relationship with Hudson, he said the pair “had great chemistry.”

“But we had a really good push and pull,” he recalls. “She had a lot of rock ‘n’ roll and so did I, the way we countered each other really worked in that movie.”
