A source close to the investigation said police believe this could be a key reason why the search has been stalled for so many years.

On Saturday, the source said: “The Christian B today is not the same person he was in 2007 when Maddie disappeared.

“German detectives are convinced he looks very, very different and have wasted tens of thousands of pounds changing the way he looks.

“For a long time, Christian B was a prolific drug dealer who made a lot of money money and lived a very long time Nice lifestyle. He had the means to undergo surgery and make changes to the way he looked.

“Officers believe there is a good chance that the way he looks now is an illusion of the man he was ten or fifteen years ago.

“They have always been concerned that this is an important area that the police in the Algarve have not been able to properly monitor or investigate from day one. So it's an area they'll be focusing on a lot more in the coming months.”

The source added that there is even a chance they could reissue photo e-fits and wild posters to find new information about the chilling case.

One of the ways Brueckner is said to have hidden his identity was by having surgery to remove a birthmark on his left thigh after an alleged rape.

That's what prosecutors claim Brueckner47, had it erased to avoid being identified following a knife attack on a student Hazel Behan was stuck on him.

The woman told me Police exactly where the recognizable mark was located during Job interviews although it was no longer on the body of main suspect Brueckner.

However, officers found scars in the spot Hazel had described on him.

A source said: “When Brueckner was examined during his current captivity, they found a scar where the birthmark should have been.

“Then they went through the archives again and found a body scan of Brueckner, taken by German researchers.

“Crucially, photographs were taken of his entire body and at this time he had a significant mole on his upper left leg at the hip.”

The evidence against the German pedophile has been presented to judges.

It is also said that he spent £7,500 to reset his jaw and straighten four “rabbit teeth”. just four months after Maddie disappeared Praia da Luz in the Portuguese Algarve.

A police sketch that emerged in the following days showed a man with a billy goat teeth near the McCanns' holiday apartment.

Brueckner appeared court was confronted earlier this week with a series of violent sex crimes in and around the resort where Maddie disappeared.

One of these alleged victims is Irish mother Hazel Behan, who says he raped her when she was 20 and working as a holiday worker in Portugal in 2004.

He is also accused of raping and abusing a teenage girl and a 70- to 80-year-old woman at his home in Praia da Luz between December 2000 and June 2006.

Prosecutors allege Brueckner also sexually abused children Portugal twice.

A handcuffed Brueckner brazenly entered the hearing with a blank expression on his face the trial was adjourned after a judge “kill the b*****d” rant was read out in court.

The process takes just nine minutes.

Brueckner's latest trial does not relate to the McCann case, but police hope a series of witnesses giving evidence could lead them to uncover a chilling overlap.

Other sickening allegations the court heard included that he masturbated in front of a girl at a playground in Mesen in June 2017.

He is also facing claims that he did the same in front of another girl, on the beach of Salema, Portugal, in April 2007.

Brueckner, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for rape, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

If found not guilty, he would be free in two years when his current prison sentence expires.

He denies all charges against him.

LINK TO MADELINE

Brueckner was identified four years ago as the main suspect in the kidnapping of Madeleine from her family's holiday flat in Portugal in 2007.

The three-year-old disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve while on holiday with parents Kate and Gerry, 55, from Rothley, Leics.

German investigators believe Brueckner kidnapped and murdered her, although no charges have been filed against him.

Previously, they felt like they were hitting a wall with the investigation because no new clues had emerged for months.

The source told us: “Detectives hope the trial will provide new information and areas on which they can focus.

“They receive virtually no support from the police in Portugal who excluded Christian B a while ago. As far as they are concerned, linking him to Maddie is nonsense.”

They hope the fallout from the new case can finally reveal crucial details about the toddler's disappearance in Portugal.
