Major bank with 400 branches announces new wave of closures at 22 locations
A major bank on the main shopping streets will close another series of branches in the coming months, a new blow to the shopping streets.
Barclays will begin pulling down the shutters at 16 locations in England, two in Wales, one in Scotland and one in Ireland, from May.
Locations in London, Liverpool and Livingston will be affected.
It comes just two weeks after the banking giant revealed it would close 20 branches from April.
Barclays has announced almost 200 branch closures in recent years and says only 10% of transactions now take place face-to-face.
At the end of June last year, the bank had 414 branches, but an updated figure will be published in the bank's results on February 20.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “As branch visits continue to decline, we must adapt to provide the best service to all our customers.
“Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain a personal presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 300 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our banking pods.
“We also support access to cash with our no-purchase cashback service, 24-hour ATMs and by working with the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”

At the beginning of this year, Barclays announced five closures, all of which will also take place in April.
It followed the announcement of 18 closures in December.
Other major lenders have also closed branches, including NatWest, Lloyds, Virgin Money and Halifax.
The closures are largely due to an increase in customers at major banks switching to online banking and the use of apps.
Barclays has already announced that it will close the following 74 branches this year:

More than 200 bank branches will close their doors this year as companies want to leave the shopping streets.
Customers have already seen their local main bank disappear, as more than 600 banks closed in 2023 alone.
Lloyds Banking Group recently announced that it will close 45 branches in the new year.
Many people, especially the elderly, rely heavily on in-person services and the closures will make it more difficult for them to access services.
You can find your nearest branch using the locator on each bank's website.
But there are still a number of ways affected customers can access basic banking services without having to go to the next city.
If the latest round of closures leaves you without a branch in your city, you should be able to do most basic tasks at your local post office.
You can use one of the Post Office's nearly 12,000 branches to perform basic tasks, but you can't open new bank accounts or take out personal loans and mortgages.
Several banks also offer a mobile banking service. This involves your bank bringing a bus to your local area with the services normally available in your branch.
You should call your bank to see if it offers such a service. They can tell you where and when the car will be parked.
Other banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer mobile banking.
Banking hubs, offering traditional shared services, have also been set up in several locations across Britain to help close the gap – including Brixham, Cambuslang, Cottingham and Rochford.
