A MAN today admitted murdering a grandmother who was found in a pool of blood in her village home following a suspected burglary.

Beryl'BezPurdy, 86, was beaten to death in Broomfield, Somerseton March 27 last year.

David Parish today pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility Bristol Crown Court.

The 36-year-old, who had denied murderwas taken into custody and sentenced on March 1.

Anna Vigars KC, prosecuting, told the court: “We have received psychiatric reports on behalf of the defense and the Crown.

'They both come to the same conclusion.

'I can confirm that if a plea of ​​not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility were entered, this would be acceptable to the Crown.'

Police were called to Beryl's home after reports of a burglary.

They discovered that the seriously injured church warden was “lying in a pool of blood on the ground”.

Tributes poured in for Beryl, who was described as an “absolute pillar of the community”.

Her family said: “As a family we are devastated to have lost a dear wife, mother and grandmother.

“Bez was a caring person who would help anyone in need and was a big part of the village, having been a church warden for 20 years.

“We will miss her dearly and we are all struggling to understand why this has happened to such a lovely person.”
