Man charged with murder after grandfather ‘knocked down and killed while trying to stop Range Rover from being stolen’

Police investigating the death of a grandfather believed to have been run over by his own car have charged a man with murder.

Christopher Hanley, 57, was found unconscious by members of the public in Olympic Street in Beswick, ManchesterSaturday just before 11 a.m.

But he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of emergency services.

Marvin Sutton, 35, of no fixed abode, has now been charged with murder.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed he had been remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at Tameside Magistrates on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man remains on bail on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Hanley died after apparently being hit by his own body Range Rover while trying to prevent it from being stolen, police said.

Chris’ family paid tribute to him yesterday: “As a family we are heartbroken and shocked by the sudden loss of Chris.

“A beloved and devoted family man who adored his grandchildren, tragically and unfairly, and was taken far too soon.

“At this time, we as a family ask for privacy to show respect for Chris and his memory.”
