It comes after he missed training on Friday claiming to be ill, before it emerged he had been partying in Belfast until the early hours of that morning.

Rashford's agent, his brother Dwaine Maynard, was also present at the Carrington talks.

The local boy could face Wolves on Thursday but is expected to be fined two weeks' wages – around £650,000.

In a statement, United said: “Marcus has taken responsibility for his actions. This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which has now been closed.”

There are now major concerns at Old Trafford about the way 26-year-old Rashford is living his life.

It has become an open topic at United as their top scorer from last season with 30 goals is out of form and looking unhappy.

Ten Hag said the forward had been left out of the squad for Sunday's 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport because he had “called in sick”.

But there was clearly more going on.

Ten Hag said: “He called in sick and the rest is an internal matter. Like I said, we will deal with it.”

It is believed that, with the Euro this summer, England is keeping a close eye on the situation.

It is not the first time that Rashford has been in trouble this season.

Ten Hag had to warn him because he was celebrating his birthday at Manchester's China White, hours after United were beaten 3-0 by city rivals City in October.

Rashford was on the bench for a 1-0 win at Wolves last season when he arrived late for the team's pre-match meeting, claiming he had overslept.

But he scored the second-half winner.

Ten Hag initially accepted his reason was that he was too ill to train last Friday, but then learned that Rashford was absent until the early hours before catching a private jet back to Manchester.

The Dutch boss has been a strict disciplinarian, banning Jadon Sancho for a social media post questioning the manager.

Sancho is loaned to Borussia Dortmund.

Ten Hag also ended Cristiano Ronaldo's second spell early after the superstar became a disruptive influence.

Local boy Rashford has been playing for United since the age of seven and came into the spotlight at the age of 17.
