Mel B doesn’t think she can be Scary Spice today

While Mel B Perhaps best known as ‘Scary Spice’ in the Spice Girls, she doesn’t think it will stand the test of time.

“Now I think we’re being a little too politically correct,” Mel B (real name Melanie Brown), 48, said on the Wednesday, February 28, episode of the ‘How to Fail with Elizabeth Day’ podcast. “I have calmed down in recent years. Previously, if you were to interview me, I would say, “Show me your questions.” I would be the protector of the group that comes in there and says, ‘Wait a minute.’

Mel B noted that her tendencies can be “a little too spicy or scary” — which is why she thinks her name suits her perfectly.

“So that name was given and I love it. Just the fact that I’m a little scary, and I have larger than life hair, and that’s just me.’ she said. ‘Nowadays someone would have taken offense to that. But I don’t take offense. Whether you are black, white or mixed, there is a little ‘scary’ in all of us.”

The Spice Girls – aka Mel B, Victoria Beckham (Fancy spices), Geri Halliwell (ginger spices), Melanie Chisholm (Sporting spices) and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) — formed in 1994. The group had several hits, including 1996’s “Wannabe,” and were loved by fans for their various onstage personas.

Mel B recalled that the group was given their names by a journalist who “couldn’t be bothered to remember.” [their] full names” – and the nicknames stuck.

“He just called us that, and we all said, ‘Oh God, I kind of like my name,’” she said.

Mel B added that each individual’s name was not just a character they put on, but instead fit their personality.

“It’s funny because Emma still loves pink to this day and if she had her way she would put her hair in ponytails,” she said. “Mel C will never get out of a tracksuit, and she always has her hair in a ponytail. Victoria is very sleek and elegant. Geri, she’s gone through a little change, but she’s still that cruel Union Jack girl underneath her, the lady of the house, let me tell you.

She continued, “So we’re all exactly the same. That’s good, considering we started when we were 17, 18, 19 and now we’re 48, 49, 50.”

In January, Mel B exclusively teased it We weekly that “all five” members of the group could reunite soon, saying: “The only thing I can officially say is that we will make an announcement soon and the fans will be very happy. That’s all I can say, but I can’t wait to say more.”
